There are places that are considered haunted due to their geological phenomena or places associated with intense emotions, such as abandoned buildings, cemeteries, or former asylums, can also be considered haunted due to the lingering energy of past occupants. 

There are many places in the world which are abandoned and haunted due to some historical events, or due to some tragedies that took place in the 90s or 80s. The most eeriest places are those islands which had inhabitants and are now empty.

Here are 4 of the haunted and forsaken islands in the world

The Island of the Dead Dolls – Mexico

Location

The Island of the Dolls is located in the canals of Xochimilco, south of the center of Mexico City, Mexico. It was an artificial island built on fresh water for agricultural purposes but due to a tragedy which took place in the 1950s, it is said that the dolls have taken over. 

The Back Story

The story behind this island was that there was a man named Santana Barrera. He came to the shores of the said island and made a chilling discovery for a small girl floating in the canals and her doll was with her which was the point his whole life changed along with the islands’. In order to appease the spirit of the small girl, he took the doll and hung it on the tree and Barrera considered himself the caretaker of the island. For him, one doll wasn’t enough so he hanged each and every doll he would find in the trash and from the canals. For the next 50 years he has this aim to hang dolls on trees, some he’d hang whole, others in various states of disrepair like headless, torso-less, or taken apart in other ways.

However in 2001 the caretaker Santana Barrera was found dead from the same canal and at the same place where he used to say he found the dead girl’s body. Up Till now a lot of people pay tribute to Barrera and that girl by hanging the dead dolls. 

Poveglia Island – Vanice 

Location

Poveglia Island is located in the southwest end of Lido di Venezia. This Poveglia island is a set of three islands in which the smallest one was used as a small fort for protecting the whole island. 

The Back Story

It is said that this island is made up of human ash as during the Venice and Napoleon wars a lot of people lost their lives. As many said there wasn’t any place to bury the dead bodies so there was a doctor. He suggested burning the bodies since they would start rotting, later on, they got to know that the doctor was crazy and used to do experiments on the patients of mental asylum by which they died. Now it’s rumored that the place is taken by the spirits of those dead people.

There was once the ancient San Vitale church; however, it was destroyed when Napoleon Bonaparte passed through. Today, only the bell tower remains.  This ancient structure was saved due to its useful function as a lighthouse but no one can visit since it’s not allowed.

Cairo Citadel – Egypt

Location

The citadel of Cairo was located in the Mokattam Hills area which is the highest point in Cairo. specifically, the room is known as “The Hall of Joseph Bonaparte.” This location is said to be haunted by the spirit of a woman.

The Back Story

The folks say that this place was haunted by the daughter of the commander Zaineb. Legend says that Zeinab fell in love with a French soldier named Joseph Bonaparte during Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt. When Bonaparte was ordered to return to France, Zeinab was heartbroken and ultimately died of a broken heart. Her spirit is believed to haunt the Citadel, particularly the room where she spent her final days.

The visitors and guards of the area have reported hearing footsteps, whispers, and apparitions in the same room.  The story of Zeinab’s tragic love and untimely death continues to fascinate visitors to the Cairo Citadel, making it one of Egypt’s most renowned haunted locations.

Daksa – Croatia

Location

Daksa Island, located off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea, is a place with a haunting history that draws visitors intrigued by its eerie past. The name itself, Daksa, translates to “death” in Croatian, hinting at the dark tales associated with it.

The Back Story

In 1944, a group of civilians from Dubrovnik were brought to Daksa and summarily executed without trial. This tragic event left a mark on the island, with stories of restless spirits and lingering energies haunting its shores. This place became haunted when people started believing in superstitions and spread rumors about it.

The reason is not a pretty one, and for many locals Daksa is a place they would rather simply forget. The island was the scene of a brutal massacre back in 1944, and ever since then it has been the subject of ghost stories and superstition. Even today, the crimes committed on Daksa have still not been subject to a proper investigation;
